As the global community commemorates World Malaria Day, Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts (Local), Prince Nureni Akinsanya is urging residents to prioritize cleanliness and proper hygiene in order to combat the spread of malaria.

This is contained in a statement on Friday to commemorate World Malaria Day 2024 with the theme “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”

Malaria, a life-threatening disease transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, continues to pose a significant health risk in many parts of the world.

According to the Federal Government in 2023,  the country still accounts for 27 percent of global malaria cases and 32 percent of global malaria deaths. “It is estimated that approximately 55 million cases of malaria and nearly 90,000 malaria-related deaths occur each year in our country.”

Recognizing the impact that malaria has on the lives of individuals and communities, Honourable Akinsanya, representing Mushin Constituency 1 believes that prevention should be a top priority. Through maintaining clean surroundings and practicing good hygiene, every individual can contribute to reducing the risk of malaria transmission.

In his message to the residents, He emphasized the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding grounds by regularly cleaning stagnant water sources, such as containers, flower pots, and gutters. By doing so, the number of mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite can be significantly reduced, thereby lowering the risk of transmission.

He also highlighted the significance of personal hygiene and protective measures to prevent mosquito bites. “It is crucial for individuals to use mosquito repellents, sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets, and wear protective clothing, especially during peak mosquito activity times.

Akinsanya calls on Health Centers, Religious Bodies, NGOs to support the government to enhance public awareness campaigns on the importance of cleanliness and personal hygiene in malaria prevention.

Recall, Honourable Akinsanya have organized fumigation exercise in all churches, mosques and public places.
